How to Get Started With a Garage Sale Business

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009
Victor Tunggal Irawan asked:

While garage sales are fun and exciting to organize, they are essentially business ventures and therefore must be treated as such. Bottom line, you must make sure that your garage sale will generate profit or it may be the last time you can hold one.

What to Sell

Products are the life of garage sales. No matter how great the atmosphere is, how friendly the sellers are, if the products are undesirable and worthless, there is no way for your garage sale to succeed.

Collect items that you believe are going to sell. If possible, concentrate on a theme because this makes your garage sale more interesting. If most of the items you’re selling are antiques, you can advertise your sale with themes like “Back to the Past” or “Going Nostalgic”.

The People behind the Sales

Garage sales are more successful when they are organized by a group of people. It’s better to ask people whose company you enjoy to help you out with your garage sale like your family, relatives, friends and colleagues.

Taking Care of the Technicalities

Now that you know what you’re going to sell and who’s going to help you out, the next thing you should concentrate on is obtaining a permit. You will only be awarded a license to put up a garage sale if you’re willing and able to comply with their requirements. Among other things, you should have ready information about when and where you’re planning to set up store.

Advertising about the Event

Advertising is one of the important keys for your garage sale business to become profitable. It’s important for as many people as possible to learn about your garage sale. Your advertisement options however may be limited or constrained by the terms and conditions of your license. Be resourceful and creative when designing sign boards and flyers. If you have a lot of money invested in your garage sale, don’t hesitate to spend a little for paid advertisements like placing ads in newspapers and making use of press release services.

Establishing Garage Sale Policies

Set up a baggage counter to prevent customers with malicious intent from being able to stow items in their bags. Be prepared to say no to people who are wishing to rest for a little while inside your house. Set up an improvised dressing room with a full-length mirror so that people won’t have to request to enter your home for fitting purposes.

Lastly, never forget to serve and sell with a smile. That’s sure to give your customers another reason to come back!

Ditch the Garage Sale Idea & Sell Your Odd Shoes Online

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Kent Basson asked:

If you have different sized feet and you have purchased mismatched pair of shoes in the past, you probably have a closet filled with unused shoes.  The first thing that comes to mind is to sell your mismatched odd shoes at a garage sale.  That’s a great idea; however, most people who buy shoes at garage sales or flea markets prefer to purchase a pair of shoes that are the same size and color.  Unless a person is an avid shoe collector and they are not concerned about size, you will have a difficult time selling your odd shoes – no matter how low you price them.

The answer to this problem is to ditch the garage sale this year and sell your odd shoes online.  The following are a few ways to sell your odd shoes online.

You can hire a web designer to build a website to sell your unused odd shoes. Hire a graphic designer to design a logo, flyers, brochures and business cards printed and you’re all set to go.  The problem with this idea is that you could spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on just having your website built alone.  If you only have 5 pairs of shoes to sell, this is complete waste of money.

Sell your odd shoes on an auction site.  This is a great idea, however, most popular auction sites charge a fee to post your merchandise or charge you a fee when you sell an item.

Post your odd shoe advertisement on a free classified ad website such as Craigslist.  The problem with this is that you’re basically shooting in the dark because your ad will be placed in a general category such as “clothes and accessories”.  The chances of finding someone interested in purchasing odd shoes or mismatched shoes is very slim.

The best idea since the invention of the shoe is the online shoe exchange.  Websites like OddShoeFinder connect people who want to sell their odd shoes or single shoes with people who want to buy odd shoes. Best of all, you’re not charged to sell your odd shoes.

How to Have a Successful Garage Sale

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Customer Service asked:

Having a successful garage sale is an exciting experience and can net you additional monies for items you no longer want.  Hard work and a great deal of planning will give you the desired results.   Remember, your trash can be another persons’ treasure.

In the town where I live, a neighbor displays his unwanted items for sale a number of times a year.  I go out of my way to pass this house, hoping to see the “Yard Sale” sign by the road.  The people are accommodating and there is something for everyone.  Dishes and precious items are artfully displayed on tables and clearly marked with a price.  Toys are on the driveway so children can see them and old furniture, baskets and tools are strategically placed at the end of the driveway.  If something catches my eye, I stop to see what other items are available.

Even though prices are clearly marked, I often negotiate a lower price.  I love yard sales and a bargain, so my suggestions are a guideline for a successful yard sale.

     1. Plan on the time of year you want to have your yard sale.  It is not a good idea to have a sale if the weather is too hot or cold or near the holidays and don’t forget a rain date.

     2. Look through your attic, basement, garage, back yard and shed or even in your home for the items you want to get sell.  Decide if you want to have a neighborhood sale or a combined sale with your friends or family.  Remember, the more of a selection of items, the better your yard sale will be.

     3. Advertise.  Advertise.  Advertise.  Go to http://www.urummage.com for an economical way to advertise your sale.  Remember, you can download signs, a checklist for your yard sale, as well as, get the maximum exposure in your area for a relatively low price.  The longer you advertise, prior to your sale, the more of a success you will have.  (Note:  Urummage.com does not guarantee a successful yard sale.  Success depends on you.)

     4. Now you can concentrate on marking your items with a price.  Try using tags or stickers on each item.  This way you can code the item with a letter and price.  If you have a multi-family yard sale, the letter can represent the last name of the owners’ item and the price of the item.  As you sell the items, collect the tags and at the end of the day, you will be able to calculate who gets the money.  You can also keep a notebook to jot down the code, price and brief description.

     5.  Your customers will probably want to negotiate prices because everyone loves a bargain!  Be fair, you want folks to come back if you happen to have another sale.

     6. If you have antiques for sale, a suggestion would be to have the item appraised.

     7. Finally, have enough cash on hand at the start of your sale to make change.

     8. Do yourself a favor, if you either have items left from your sale, save them for an upcoming yard sale or donate them to the needy.  The purpose of your sale is to get rid of your stuff!

     9. The Resources Section is a useful guide to help ease the pain of having a Successful Yard Sale.  You will find links to familiar sites on reference material, supplies and suggestions.

The best sale is a planned sale.  You do not want to have to run around the day of the sale collecting your items.  Start at least two months before the sale and take inventory of the items you want to sell.  Maybe you have children’s items that you no longer need.  Group them together, take a picture of each group and list them on uRummage.com.   You will find when you are organized your sale can have a positive impact on viewers all over the country.

Now, get started and advertise on uRummage.com for exposure you will not get from advertising in your local paper.   Remember, uRummage.com will be the largest listing of rummage sales on the internet. uRummage

6 Fundraising Options For Any Organization

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Donna Rivera-Loudon asked:

One of the challenges for any group or organization is finding new ways to raise funds. It seems that everyone sells candy bars or puts on a car wash. Below are some fundraising ideas that might be a nice change and help your group raise funds using something unique that isn’t being done by every other group out there.

1. Silent Auction

Have various members of your group donate items and then hold a silent auction. It is easy to do this. Just set aside a table or shelf. Give each item a piece of paper that people can write their bids on. The highest bidder wins the auction.

2. Direct Sales Companies

Several of the direct sales and party plan companies also have fundraising programs. Some of these programs are quite good. What is nice about some of these plans is that your group does not have to buy any stock in advance. Everything is done using catalogs. People place their orders and the consultant orders all the items. The majority of the time the consultant will pack all the orders and separate them by seller. Usually the consultant will give some type of incentive for the highest seller to encourage more fundraiser sales. Examples of direct sales companies that have fundraiser programs are Tupperware and Avon. These companies have a good reputation and a well know brand name. This helps to encourage your sales. If you use a company that is not well know, your sales may not be as good.

3. Rummage Sale

Put on a rummage sale. Ask for donations from all groups members. Advertise your rummage sale in the yard sale section of your local newspaper. Have your group members help at the fundraiser. The easiest way to price everything is to have tables for each price group. Then make signs for each table. For example, everything on this table is $1. Making a sign for each table or even for a certain corner or box will help eliminate the extra work of pricing everything individually.

4. Host a vendor fair or farmer’s market or Trade show

This works well if you have a building or parking lot. Rent out booths. This can be as simple as each parking space is so much or so much per table. Those in direct sales are always looking for opportunities to set up displays so they are the first ones you should call. Contact law enforcement agencies and other informational type organizations who might be willing to set up a display. You can also rent spaces to group members who may want to sell some stuff lying around their house but don’t want to put on a yard sale of their own. However, keep in mind that you don’t want this to be a big rummage sale. It works best when the majority of your vendors are selling new items. If you set your rent low enough you can also request that a percentage of sales go to the group. For example, you can rent tables for $10 and then ask for 10 percent of their sales for your group.

One thing to keep in mind is that in order for people to rent a space or table they need to know that people will be attending this event. Hence, make sure all group members publicize it. Put fliers for the event everywhere you can and consider placing an ad in the newspaper. If your vendors find your event was successful for them, they will be calling you asking you to do it again. Hence, more funds for your organization.

5. A New Take on Car Washes

I mentioned car washes earlier. Several groups seem to do them. However, there is a different way to do car washes that can actually raise more money for your group. This is done by selling tickets to your car wash in advance. You will be surprised at how many people will buy a tickets. Some of them may not come to the car wash but will buy a ticket to help out your group. Some groups have actually doubled their fundraiser proceeds by selling these tickets in advance.

6. Host a luncheon or dinner

Hosting a luncheon or dinner is a nice way to raise funds. Of course, you have to host the dinner but this may not be as difficult as you might think. Many restaurants have specials rooms that they use to host conferences, etc. These rooms can be rented for a fundraiser dinner. Often, the restaurants will also provide the food. Hence, it is just a matter of determining the cost of the room and the meals and then adding so much per ticket. Sell the tickets in advance. Following are some ideas on luncheons and dinners.

a. Hold a Valentine’s dinner. Order a nice cake, have candy hearts on the tables, balloons, flowers, etc. One time I went to such an event with my church. Our pastor actually did a vow renewal service for all of us and the night was very special.

b. Christmas lunch or dinner. Decorate the room in a Christmas theme and have some gifts set aside. Play games for the gifts. Provide a small gift for everyone who buys a dinner ticket.

c. Any type of theme will work. Make it fun and interesting so people will want to purchase tickets to your event.

Fundraising can definitely be a challenge. However, there are plenty of options out there. I only listed a few of them above, but the opportunities out there for raising funds are endless

How to Beat Metabolic Syndrome

Thursday, March 26th, 2009
Bruce Forciea asked:

The American diet is too high in calories, saturated fat, cholesterol and salt and too low in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In my opinion one of the most important hidden culprits contributing to the obesity epidemic is high fructose corn syrup. Just visit the center isles of your local grocery store, pick up a few products and read the labels. You will be surprised at how many products contain high fructose corn syrup.

The problem is that high fructose corn syrup gets quickly converted into glucose. The glucose enters your bloodstream and is either used as a fuel for producing energy or is converted into fat. In order for the glucose to be used as energy you need to be exercising rather vigorously (aerobically). Since most of us don’t exercise continually the glucose gets stored as fat.

The other problem with high fructose corn syrup and high levels of glucose in our bodies has to do with insulin. The pancreas secretes the hormone insulin to allow the cells to use glucose as a fuel. The cells contain insulin receptors that allow the cells to use glucose. After long periods of high blood glucose these receptors don’t work as well. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood, a condition known as type 2 diabetes.

Your genetics also play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes. If your family has a history of obesity or diabetes you may be at an increased risk for developing it.

This doesn’t happen overnight. It generally takes years to develop type 2 diabetes. Before developing diabetes many people develop a condition known as metabolic syndrome or syndrome X. Eating foods high in sugar can lead to this. People first develop metabolic syndrome and this eventually develops into diabetes.

Here are some of the signs of metabolic syndrome:

High blood pressure (135/85 or greater)

Central obesity–waist circumference 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women.

Low HDL levels (good cholesterol) less than 40 mg/dL.

High fasting blood glucose levels of 110 mg/dL or greater.

High triglycerides (150 mg/dL or greater)

According to the National Cholesterol Education Program if you have any three of the above signs you have metabolic syndrome.

Source: National Cholesterol Education Program, Third Report of the Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel III), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, May 2001.

It turns out that too many simple carbohydrates mess up our cells. To be more specific that high fructose corn syrup tends to down regulate our cells’ insulin receptors. This leads to what is called insulin resistance. Insulin is what helps to regulate the amount of glucose in our bodies. If our receptors aren’t responding the insulin can’t work and we end up with more glucose in our system that is stored as fat. This leads to weight gain–middle aged spread and eventually to type II diabetes. It also contributes to the buildup of plaque in arteries.

It is better to choose foods that get converted into glucose at a slower pace. Bacon n eggs fit the bill but are too high in cholesterol. What’s left are lower fat foods like most fruits, veggies, soy protein, nuts, bran.

The key is the glycemic index of foods. The glycemic index tells how fast the food gets converted into glucose. You need to choose foods with a low (less than 10 is ideal) glycemic index.

Exercise also helps decrease the glucose and fat in our bodies. We don’t have to get in shape to run that marathon, but 30 minutes of brisk walking can provide some nice benefits. If you need a treadmill or exercise bike just go to any neighborhood rummage sale. Walking in your local mall works too but this can get expensive.

It is important to watch your cholesterol levels but it turns out that cholesterol is not the whole story when it comes to plaquing up the arteries. For years the medical establishment touted that we get our total cholesterol under control, first below 220, then 200. Now in some cases cardiologists are comparing cholesterol lowering to the limbo game; “how low can you go?”

What may be more important than total cholesterol are those little packages of fat that your liver makes to send it around your body. There are good packages (HDLs) and bad boys (LDLs). Also, those bad LDLs can be big or small and it’s the small ones that can deposit on the inner walls of the arteries and build up. This is kind of the like the plumbing in an old house. We used to live in one and you couldn’t flush the toilet when taking a shower without reducing the comforting warm embrace of the water to a cold trickle.

So how can we keep the pipes from blocking up short of hiring Roto Rooter (in cardiology language that spells angioplasty) or rebuilding the plumbing. Well statins are a start but there is more we can do by taking some important nutritional substances. Hey I know this is more pills but nutrition is good, right?

There are a few and I will start with one superstar for the heart–Co enzyme Q10 or CoQ10. This is a biggie and can lower blood pressure as well as reduce the muscles aches and pains associated with statins. The recommended form is an oil-based pill and the dose is 100mg-300mg daily.

Fish-fish-fish. Yes, fish are full of those amazing omega 3 fatty acids. Now there are also omega 3 eggs, cooking oils and spreads for those who are not akin to eating those scaly creatures. You have to take a pretty good dose of a high-quality capsule–3000 to 4000 mg/day with at least 30% of the capsule containing EPA and DHA.

Get in the sun, or, take vitamin D. VItamin D is experiencing a kind of resurgance in popularity in the nutrition world these days as some newer studys tout its cancer fighting abilities. Vitamin D helps by reducing inflammation in the plaque. There is a marker of inflammation called C-reactive protein and vitamin D has been shown to lower this. The recommended dose depends on how much sunlight you get but can range from 1000-6000 units per day for those with coronary artery disease.

Lastly, there is a nutrient that helps to increase the chemical nitric oxide in the vascular system. Yes, that’s what Viagra and the plethora of ED drugs do in a certain part of the male anatomy, but guys need vasodilation in their arteries too. The recommended dose is large –3000-6000mg, twice per day. Better to use a powder for this one.

There are a few more but these seem to be the main nutritional weapons that help in the fight against coronary artery disease.

As always, you need to consult with your healthcare practitioner before using nutritional or herbal substances.

Yard Sale Secrets Revealed

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009
Ronald W. Firquain asked:

Buying bulk can be really addicting. Imagine saving a few dollars if you buy a six per pack of a product compared to buying just one? The savings that you can potentially have can be really hard to resist.

Knowing this, groceries and superstores have been employing this marketing strategy since time immemorial. Buy two and take 1 for free or buy three and save a dollar. There are even packs of items that combine products that are saleable and not so saleable and the strategy works. People buy things that they never really use on the long term.

Most of these products are just kept in garages or in stock rooms, often forgotten. So instead of saving their money, they have actually paid for something that they have not been able to use. And they only find out about this when they do a spring cleaning in their houses.

To recoup their losses, as often said in business, most organize garage sale or yard sales in order to get rid of the items in the house that they have not been able to benefit from. Buying in yard sale can be really economical since the items are sold in cheaper prices while being relatively new. In fact, some of them are not even used. Below are some yard sale secrets that can help you find a good buy when buying in yard sales.

Come early

Remember that you are not the only one in the neighborhood who is in search of a good buy. Virtually everyone else will.

want to buy something that is worth their hard earned dollar to the cent. If you want to be able to buy the good ones, then you should make it a point to be there in the yard sale early. If you can be the earliest bird there, all the better. Although you will be able to buy something in the afternoon, you will have missed out on all the great stuff that people in the morning shift have already bought. There will also be more variety when you come early.

Haggle

Prices in garage sales are not fixed. This means that you can haggle with the price. Try to get as low a price as you can. One technique is to start low and then work your way up just in case the person having the garage sales does not agree with the price that you want. Of course, before quoting a price, you should also have a pretty good idea how much the product is. That way, you will know just when a price is already unreasonably low!

Look for the tags

Garage sale or yard sales products are a mix of old and new ones. As much as you can, try to look for products or items that still have tags on them. Items that are in plastic are also another good buy. Just be patient in unearthing treasures.

Get hold of it

If you want something, take hold of it. This is true with life and with yard sale secrets. Although you can certainly think about buying something first, there should not be so much dilly-dallying involved. One technique is to get hold of the items that you want and then just decide when you are already near the counter. That way, other people will not have the opportunity to get it if you really want it.

Tips for a Smooth and Successful Garage Sale

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009
Victor Tunggal Irawan asked:

Do you find yourself lost within the clutter of your home? Or do you always feel that a few extra bucks could help you make ends meet? Then why not have a garage sale, after all one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

You don’t have to have a lot of stuff to start selling. You could ask for handouts from neighbors, family, or friends, something they think they can part with, this way combined with your things you are sure to provide your customers with a variety of purchasable items.

When you think you have all the things you need to get started, then you should begin planning, starting with the sale date. It would be most effective to schedule the sale on a weekend far from any holiday or any special day within your community. You should probably also anticipate the weather for that day so that you can adjust if the weather is uncooperative. Regarding the time, it would be best to hold it in the morning.

The next step is to make the event official by having it announced in the most popular periodical in your area, or by putting up posters, or both. If possible, maybe you could also have a local radio station mention the affair. Publicize the event on bulletin boards.

Buy several stickers, post-its, and different colored markers, and use them before the day of your sale. This would help you organize your products. You may need to borrow some tables and racks so that you can better display your merchandise. Also, prepare smaller bills and coins for change. If you have a container with several compartments then you should place the money there, keeping in mind that this should be something you could carry around. Clean and remove some of the stuff from the garage if you are having the sale there and mark items in the garage that you are not planning to sell. Also make sure that the garage is well lit on the sale date. Place electrical equipment that are for sale near an electrical outlet or set up an extension cord. Check signage ordinances in your neighborhood and set some of them up on nearby street corners, make them noticeable with big and bold letters, and eye-catching colors.

Put your goods in order one or two hours before you open. Lastly, don’t be afraid to bargain with customers. You are expected to put a reasonable price on your stuff but that doesn’t mean that you should submit to the buyer, unless of course if you really want to get rid of that object.

Progressive Trivial Pursuit Church Fundraising

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Shauna Hanus asked:

Are you attending a church full of life and enthusiasm for Christ or are you in a church where the members are slowing down and feeling less willing to step up and join in? Both scenarios are quite common in churches of today. If you are a church worker in a church that fits the bill for this second scenario you job of fundraising just got harder.

You may be asking yourself how I fundraise when my congregation does not want to hear us asking for more money. This becomes your challenge. Your congregation has been to the bake sales fundraiser and they come and shop at the annual rummage sale fundraiser but they may not want to give much more than this.

For you the church worker who has done the cell phone fundraiser and the ink cartridge fundraiser here is an idea to shake things up a bit.

How about a progressive Trivial Pursuit Tournament Fundraiser. The way this works is similar to a chess tournament. Your Trivial Pursuit participants pay an entrance fee to enter the tournament. You will have 10 to 20 Trivial Pursuit games going in the beginning. Then with the end of each round your pool of player’s narrows until the final two players are playing the last round in the tournament. Prizes are awarded to the winning player and the runner up.

You should have snacks available for sale and if your church is progressive you may even have beer and wine available. A progressive Trivial Pursuit Fundraiser is so much fun that as you will find your group growing larger each year. It is as much fun to come and participate as it is to watch. Your congregants may even find themselves inviting friends to come and watch. When this begins to happen your fundraiser has now gone from a straight fundraiser to an amazing outreach opportunity, and when we really stop to think about it our charge is to witness.

Selling Clothes in a Garage Sale, How Do you Do It?

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Victor Tunggal Irawan asked:

If you have a clothes and it seems almost close to bursting because of the number of clothes that are occupying it, yet are rarely worn, do not fret. There is a solution to your problem: sell clothes in a garage sale! How?

Clean, clean, clean

First things first, make sure that you clean thoroughly any and all clothes out of your closet. Take note, these clothes are those that have been worn once in one year, or even less or probably never.

Also, take out any clothes that have been stained or worn out and place them in a trash bag. Meanwhile, shoes, clothes and any accessories that are still in good condition and are somewhat still in fashion may be included in your garage sale. Any clothes from your kids may be best sorted by gender and size.

Wash and iron

Of course, clothes that are to be sold in a garage sale must best be washed and ironed first. They have to look as good as new, even if they aren’t. Place them on hangers as it also adds to the clothes sale-ability.

Check out stores that re-sale items

It is best that you visit such stores in order for you to know what they put up for sale. Try to browse their racks and make yourself familiar with the kind of clothes they are carrying. See if their clothes fit with the kind of clothes you intend to offer for sale. Doing this helps save precious time in selling clothes in a store inappropriate to your kind of clothes.

Ask where the buyer is

Better yet, try to find out what time the buyer will be in and make an appointment. Also, see the maximum quantity of clothes you could bring in when you meet with the buyer.

Go to second-hand shops

Selling clothes that are casual in style may also be offered to shops that offer second hand goods. Normally, pay out is thirty to forty percent of the selling price.

Be your own seller

Nothing beats selling your own clothes to your customers via your own internet site. To be able to gather loyal customers, try to write accurate and clear descriptions of the clothes you intend to sell. Clear and colorful photos may be helpful.

All in all, you are your best bet to have a successful garage sale. Know what you have, know what you want, and know what you plan to do – and do it of course – when you put up a clothes garage sale. In the long run, you will reap the financial benefits, and probably more.

Learn What to Look for at Garage Sales and Thrift Stores to Sell on Ebay for Extra Money!

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Jeremy Miller asked:

1. Make a Plan

First off, the best way to start out your plan is to simply plan your route.  With the gas prices at what they are today, driving back and forth from garage sale to garage sale will only eat up your profits that you are going to make!  The best thing to look in the paper for is when a town has a town wide rummage sale or a subdivision has its sale.  These are excellent because you can usually walk to 10-15 different sales.

2.  Bring Smaller Bills and Change

Make sure that you bring plenty of one dollar bills!  Also, do not forget about change.  This will help you in being able to barter with the seller.  I know what you are thinking… “Why would I barter with the seller over a few dollars when I know I am going to make much more than that on eBay?”  I advise bartering because it will not set off any flags to the seller that you are going to sell their items on eBay.  Also, if you find only one item that is unique and you are bartering with the seller, they sometimes will bring out additional items like the one that you are buying to get you to just buy it all.  This has worked out great for me many times!  Sometimes the sellers will not place the items that we are looking for in the garage sale because they think that no one will pay anything for them.

3.  Always be early

Most people will advertise that their garage sale will start at 8:00 A.M and NO EARLY SALES!  There is absolutely nothing wrong with showing up 30 minutes before the sale is suppose to start.  Most of the time, the seller is ready to start selling earlier and will open the garage door for you when you pull up.  If they are sitting outside, go ahead and walk up and greet them.  They will let you know if they are strict on not selling until a certain time.  Most of the time they will greet you back and strike up a conversation with you.  This will provide a great opportunity for you to simply ask for some general items you are looking for.

4.  Do not RUSH!

Pay attention to everything at the garage sale!  Sometimes sellers will leave valuable items (To you and I) still packed in boxes that are underneath the tables.  Do not be afraid to bend down and dig around in the boxes.  Also, when you are inside a garage and see something you want that is on the walls or doesn’t appear to be included in the sale, ask the seller if they would like to sell it to you.  The worse thing that will happen is that you will be told No.  Just remember, you can’t buy it if you don’t ask.

5.  Check the Free Boxes

Most garage sales will have a box simply marked “FREE” usually at the end of the driveway.  Don’t be embarrassed to rummage through it.  They WANT you to take the stuff of their hands.  I have found some nice items before in boxes marked free.

6.  Don’t be afraid to buy something you aren’t sure about

If you aren’t sure about an item that catches your attention, BUY the item!  Always follow your gut at a garage sale.  Besides, the most you are going to spend on something is usually around $1.00 to $5.00 so the risk vs. reward is definitely in your favor.  And if you are wrong on the item, put it in your “FREE” box at your next garage sale.
